He was just following up on the close shave Pippin had in the book: There is nothing comparable to that over here, and, speaking as a Christian myself, I find it quite scary no wonder there is so much talk of and resistance to excessive religious influence on that side! It takes for granted that there is a whole set of specifically Christian media, together with their associated gang of Christian critics. However, there is another aspect of the page which is more surprising, and from my viewpoint on the other side of the ocean, very disturbing. Certainly they praise many aspects, just as we amateur critics have always insisted on doing, but they destroy the argument with which we have been presented, that our opinions must be invalid because "the" critics have different views. There have been people who claimed to be experts on film who have objected strongly to anyone who found more than the most trivial faults in the films, yet here we have people, described as critics, presumably of the professional variety, who are commenting not only on those trivial faults but on much more substantial ones in all areas of the film's construction. Click to expand.I still think that him singing at all and choosing this song to sing are both odd ideas, but if there had to be a song then this was relevant, as you say, to some extent, and it was probably better than having one invented for him.
